she would kill him.

Chapter 5

T

he loud and sudden ringing of the telephone woke both Titus and Candice

from their sleep. In the blackness of the night, Titus fumbled with his hand to

turn on the lamp on the nightstand. The bright light briefly blinded him. His

eyes attempted to adjust to the newly introduced radiance. As he grabbed to pick up

the receiver, he noticed it was a little after two in the morning.

About an hour later, he and Candice was in the Lexus heading north on 35. Titus

glanced down at his speed. He was going about 90. He planned to stay at that speed

until he reached Dallas.

The call was from First Lady Boyd. The Bishop had suffered a massive heart attack.

He was rushed to the hospital, but his condition was not looking well. All the“sons”

were being called to come. The thing is, his wife called Titus personally from the

hospital. He could hear the tears in her voice. She told him to come quickly.

Bishop Boyd was the only true father Titus had ever had. He was treated as a son. Not

a “son” in ministry, but an actual son. He never knew his own father.

Titus’ parents had divorced while he was still young. After the divorce, his father

decided he did not want anything to do with his mother or him. Titus always held the belief he was the reason why his father left. His mom blamed him. Why else was she

so abusive?

Bishop Boyd had never done anything to hurt Titus, but molded him into the man he

was. The old man always had a positive word. As Titus drove, and was eyes seemed

lost in the darkness of the early morning, he recalled the Bishop’s unique smile. It was

a smile of comfort. It was smile of assurance. Titus loved the man. He was more than

his pastor, or mentor, or covering, but was his dad.

Sadly, as Titus and Candice disembarked from the elevators at the hospital, Bishop JC

Boyd went home to be with the Lord. No one in the filled waiting room had to speak a

word. Anguish, heartache, and sorrow filled the atmosphere. People were crying,

weeping, and grieving over the death of a great spiritual leader.

Titus caught a glimpse of First Lady Boyd huddled on the back wall with Pastor Waters

and his wife, Kelli. He grabs Candice’s hand, and they walk to their direction. As

Candice embraces First Lady Boyd, Titus hugs Pastor Waters. After all embraces are

exchanged, and tears wiped from their eyes, they all walk into the late Bishop Boyd

room.

There he lay in the bed. His body covered in white stainless sheet. He looked only to

be asleep. First Lady Boyd stood by his head, stroking his brow. The two couples

circled around the bed. Each person dedicating themselves not to weep. “Titus,” First Lady Boyd, breaking the silence, “I need you to do me a favor.”

“Anything,” Titus responded attentively.

“The press outside. I wanted to know if you could make a statement on behalf of the

family, and the church.”

“Not a problem,” he said, and then paused. “Anything in particular you want me to

say?”

“You know what to say.
